10 Most Successful Wall Street Investors of this Decade

The finance and investments industry is very well represented in the Forbes 2016 World’s Billionaires list. In fact, 61 investors cracked the top-500 with net worth ranging from as low as $3.3 billion (Joan Tisch) to as high as $60.8 billion (Warren Buffett).[1] In the following article we take a look at ten of the most successful investors of the past decade. Some of these names are very familiar.

Warren Buffett

No list of top investors is complete without the Oracle of Omaha, who managed to transform $6,000 into more than $60 billion over the course of a lifetime. Buffett, now 85, has been a billionaire for nearly 30 years.[2] In this past decade alone, Buffett’s net worth has surged more than 60% on massive deals to acquire companies like H.J. Heinz, Burlington Norther Santa Fe Corp. and Precision Castparts Corp.[3]

George Soros

George Soros is perhaps the greatest forex trader of all time, and one who has constantly cracked the upper echelons of the Forbes billionaire list. The man who “broke the Bank of England” was worth a little under $25 billion in 2016. Most recently, Soros struck it big betting against the Japanese yen in 2013 and 2014, netting him a cool $1 billion.[4]

Paul Tudor Jones

Paul Tudor Jones is another billionaire who made his riches delivering double-digit annual returns for his investment corporation. A hedge fund manager known for betting on changes in interest rates and currencies, Jones has been delivering net annual returns of 19% since 1980.[5]

John Paulson

Just how successful is the founder of Paulson & Co? Let’s just say he has more than doubled his net worth in just five years. Today, the hedge fund specialist is worth around $10 billion. His most recent successes include betting against the subprime mortgage crisis in 2007 and betting on the US economic recovery near the bottom of the market.[6]

Carl Icahn

Carl Icahn’s investment company has taken a beating this past year thanks to the oil price collapse. But his track record speaks for itself. Icahn’s net worth has surged more than 30% since 2011.[7] The gain was as high as 60% last year before the oil shock deepened. The billionaire investor owns several top-notch stocks, including Apple, American International Group and PayPal Holdings.[8]

Stanley Druckenmiller

Stanley Druckenmiller helped George Soros break the Bank of England in the early 1990s. More recently, he ran Duquesne Capital Management, where he oversaw $12 billion and never had a losing year.[9] With a net worth of $4.4 billion, Druckenmiller has recently taken interest in gold and companies like Wells Fargo, Haliburton Co. and Citigroup Inc., among others.

Ray Dalio

It’s difficult to keep Ray Dalio off the list of best investors of the past decade. After all, he runs Bridgewater Associates, the world’s largest hedge fund firm with about $140 billion in assets. As of 2015, Bridgewater had large holdings in Vanguard Intl Equity Index Funds, Spdr S&P 500 ETF Trust and Ishares Trust.[10] With a personal net worth of $15.4 billion – an increase of 23% in just two years – Dalio certainly is no slouch.

James Simons

The founder of Renaissance Technologies and “Quant King” retired from his $29 billion hedge fund company in 2010. However, the company continues to rake in all sorts of cash thanks to Simons’ secretive and consistently profitable strategy known simply as Medallion. Renaissance Technologies had a solid 2015 as other comparable hedge funds struggled to keep their heads above water. At 77, James Simons is number 50 on the Forbes billionaires list with a net worth of $15.5 billion.[11]

Joseph Safra

The world’s richest banker has had an impressive few years. In 2014 he made a massive investment in banana producer Chiquita Brands International, snatching up 50% of the shares. In the same year, he added to his real estate portfolio by purchasing a $1.1 billion London skyscraper. He also happens to own Brazil’s eighth largest bank. Safra’s net worth has surged 30% in the last three years, reaching $18 billion.[12]

Seth Klarman

Seth Klarman is one of the newest additions to the billionaire club with a net worth of around $1.5 billion. As a value investor known for steering clear of leverage, Klarman has taken his Boston-based Baupost Group to new highs. The company has received an influx of $26 billion in new money in recent years.[13] Klarman holds numerous investments and is well regarded as a value investor. What else would you expect from someone who admires Warren Buffett?[14]
