FOMC meeting and Japan elections in focus

The highlight of next week will be the FOMC statement on Wednesday. However, before the new trading week begins, focus will be a key risk event, especially for the dollar/yen pair – all eyes will be on the Japanese Lower House elections on Sunday.

Then on Monday, the markets will likely react to the election results. Meanwhile, also from Japan on Monday, there will be some economic data – the Bank of Japan publishes the latest results of its Tankan business sentiment survey.

From the UK, the Confederation of British Industry releases its latest CBI Industrial Trends Survey.

Out of the US we will see industrial production numbers, the NY Empire State Manufacturing Index and the NAHB Housing Market Index.
On Tuesday, flash PMI results for Japan, China, the Eurozone and the US are released by Markit.

ZEW issues an update on German economic sentiment, while Eurostat releases trade balance data for the currency union. Inflation numbers are meanwhile out in the UK.

In Canada, manufacturing sales figures are out, while the US sees the release of housing starts data.

On Wednesday, Japanese trade data are issued, while third quarter GDP numbers are updated in New Zealand.

The Bank of England publishes minutes from its December meeting, while unemployment and wage data are also out in the UK.

The European Central Bank’s Governing Council and General Council meet, but no interest rate decision is scheduled. However, inflation numbers and labour costs data are issued for the EuroZone.

Canada sees the publication of wholesale trade information.

In the US, inflation numbers, real earning data and current account information are out and the Federal Reserve’s Federal Open Market Committee announces its latest interest rate decision.

On Thursday, Germany releases its latest business climate data from, Ifo, while Greece sees an update on unemployment numbers.
Retail sales figures are meanwhile issued by the ONS in the UK.

Production in construction data are issued by Eurostat for the Euro area.

The Markit Flash US Services PMI is released alongside initial jobless claims numbers.

On Friday, the Bank of Japan announces its last monetary policy decision for the year.

Consumer confidence data are released by GfK in Germany and the UK, with Germany also seeing the release of producer prices, while public sector borrowing information and CBI reported sales data are out in the UK.

Current account data are meanwhile issued for the Eurozone.

Canada sees the release of inflation figures and retail sales data.
