Kick Back and Relax with the Oracle of Omaha: 5 Things Warren Buffett Does After Work

Warren Buffett is the most successful value investor of all time. When he talks, people listen. The Oracle of Omaha has remained remarkably modest over the decades, a period that has seen him become one of the richest people in the world. Of course, this has afforded him certain luxuries that many of us would only dream about.

“I have all the life I want right here,” the billionaire investor says. “I love every day. I mean, I tap dance in here and work with nothing but people I like. I don’t have to work with people I don’t like.”[1]

While a lot has been said and even more written about Warren Buffett’s recipe for success in investing, not many people have reflected on what the Oracle does after work. If Mr. Buffett inspires you, take a look at five activities the billionaire investor does after the market has closed.

#1 Read. A Lot.

We all know that reading is key to getting smart, but not many of us are aware of just how much of it is needed to attain enormous success. When asked about how to get smarter, Mr. Buffett held up a huge stack of papers and said, “read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge builds up, like compound interest.”[2]

Mr. Buffett estimates that he spends four-fifths of his waking day reading at work. Whether its financial statements, journals, economic data, reports, books and newspapers, the Oracle always has his nose buried in some reading material.

“I do more reading and thinking, and make less impulse decisions than most people in business,” he added.[3] If only most of us would read and reflect before making knee-jerk decisions, we’d a lot better off.

#2 Enjoy good food.

Mr. Buffett once hilariously said that the key to staying young is to “eat like a six-year-old.” This includes drinking five Cokes a day and snacking on potato sticks for breakfast.

“I’m one quarter Coca-Cola,” Mr. Buffett says. “If I eat 2700 calories a day, a quarter of that is Coca-Cola. I drink at least five 12-ounce servings. I do it everyday.”[4]

The soon-to-be 86-year-old also loves hamburgers, steaks and hash browns.

Mr. Buffett cleared up misconceptions about his diet way back in 2009. “My diet, though far from standard, is somewhat better than usually portrayed. I have a wonderful doctor who nudges me in your direction every time I see him. All in all, I’ve enjoyed remarkably good health — largely because of genes, of course — but also, I think, because I enjoy life so much every day.”[5]

#3 Give back.

Warren Buffett isn’t just the most successful investor of all time, he just so happens to be one of the most generous billionaires in the world who has pledged to give away 99% of his wealth.

“If you’re in the luckiest 1% of humanity, you owe it to the rest of humanity to think about the other 99%.”[6]

One of the ways Mr. Buffett is able to be so generous is his ability to keep his costs down (in other words, he’s pretty cheap). He still lives in the $31,500 house he bought in 1958. It costs significantly more to live next to him.[7]

#4 Play games that require patience.

Building a multibillion-dollar empire requires a lot of hard work and patience. One of the best ways to develop patience is to play financial “mind games,” which help the Oracle see patterns in investments. Other games that Mr. Buffett enjoys include Bridge, a trick-taking card game that consists of several deals and requires the skills of memory, probability and communication. In fact, Warren Buffett loves Bridge so much that he can often be found playing against retirees in an aging strip mall just outside Omaha.

“Join Warren Buffett for a Special Game,” reads a sign inviting people to join the Oracle for a Game of Bridge.[8] If you ever find yourself on the outskirts of Omaha on a Wednesday night, consider stopping by and challenging the Oracle at his favourite game.

#5 Find a hobby and enjoy it.

At the end of the day, not everything in life is about investing. In order to enjoy long-term success, investors need to take a load off once in a while to reset their mental circuits. Something as simple as a hobby can help investors reduce stress and actually enjoy life for once. The Oracle of Omaha loves to play the ukulele. Some of his most notable hits include Ode to Coca-Cola and A Serenade from the Oracle of Omaha (which is essentially Buffett singing the “Eyes of Texas” with his trusted ukulele).[9]

If the ukulele isn’t for you, consider any hobby that fits your interests. This could be a sport, a cooler musical instrument or even collecting something of value. Whatever you choose, try to balance your investing career with worthwhile endeavors that bring you joy and, most of all, keep you sane. If the Oracle of Omaha can be silly once in a while, so can the rest of us.
