For those of you looking to embark upon a career in trading the stock market there are lots of movies out there to get you in the mood.

While the quality of these movies varies somewhat, you will find most of them ring true and offer a healthy dose of inspiration with plenty of laughs along the way.

Barbarians at the Gate

When the RJR Nabisco buyout took place it quickly became one of, if not the most well-known takeover in American history. This movie presents an honest depiction of the event and is definitely one of the better movies based on corporate mergers.

Boiler Room

Although not necessarily the most accurate or mature imagining of most trading floors, Boiler Room is still an enjoyable watch with plenty of big name actors to keep your attention.

Inside Job

Matt Damon delivers an excellent commentary in this 2010 Oscar winning documentary. Inside Job takes an honest look at the financial crisis and provides a great deal of clarity and understanding of the various powers involved.

Wall Street

Starring Michael Douglas and Charlie Sheen, Wall Street is easily one of the best and most well-known movies about Wall Street and trading in general. If you only watch one movie in this list then it should almost certainly be this one.

The Pursuit of Happyness

This movie, starring Will Smith, takes a slightly different angle to the other entries in this list. Rather than focusing solely on stock market trading, The Pursuit of Happyness instead shows us the indomitable nature of the human spirit and serves as an inspiring wakeup call for any aspiring trader.

Enron: The Smartest Guys In The Room

As the second documentary in our movie list, Enron gives us a fascinating and insightful look at the fall of corporate giant Enron. This is definitely one to watch if you’d like to learn what not to do in your own career.

Rogue Trader

In this movie, Nick Leeson, notorious for bringing down Barings, is played by Ewan McGregor. Rogue Trader offers a depiction of the $1.4 billion scandal and Leeson’s time spent in jail in Singapore.

Trader

This aptly-titled documentary is a short film which features Paul Tudor Jones, who is well known for his success in the world of hedge funds.

Other People’s Money

Danny DeVito stars alongside Gregory Peck in this 1991 classic. This often humorous presentation of this movie is overshadowed by the dark events it portrays, and is well worth checking out if only for its entertainment value alone.

Trading Places

Speaking of comedies, Trading Places stars Eddie Murphy and Dan Aykroyd is a great watch which focuses more on commodity trading rather than the stock market. Insightful, amusing, and not to be missed.
