Trader Fact File Paul Tudor Jones

Paul Tudor Jones is an American hedge fund manager and a founder of Tudor Investment Corporation who was born in September 1954 and is currently estimated to have a net worth of $4.6 billion.

Jones possesses a trading style that focuses on contrarian buying and selling turning points. As a swing trader, Jones tends to take advantage of high and low turnarounds wherever possible.

According to Market Wizards, Jones looks at himself as a premier market opportunist, which means that he pursues his ideas – while minimizing risk – until he has repeatedly been proven wrong or until some other circumstances causes him to change his perspective.

Career

Paul Tudor Jones started his career in 1976 working as a clerk and then as a broker for E. F. Hutton & Co.

Four years later, he was accepted into Harvard Business School, before realizing: “this is crazy, because for what I’m doing here, they’re not going to teach me anything. This skill set is not something that they teach in business school.”

He then went on to found Tudor Investment Corporation in Greenwich, Connecticut.

Even today, Tudor Investment Corporation – which belongs to The Tudor Group – stands as one of the world’s leading asset management firms, involved in all manner of research, investment, and active trading across numerous financial instruments.

The firm now manages close to $20 billion, investing in a diverse array of areas such as emerging markets, venture capital, global macro trading, commodities, and event-driven strategies such as mergers and takeovers.

Facts

In 2013, Jones was listed as one of the world’s 40 Highest-Earning hedge fund managers by Forbes Magazine.

Tudor Investment Corporation charges 4% per annum of assets under management and 23% of profits. This is interesting because the industry standard is 2% per annum of assets under management and 20% of profits.

In 1987 a film entitled TRADER: The Documentary was released showing a young Paul Tudor Jones predicting the market crash of the same year.

The film itself has now faded into obscurity after Jones requested that it be removed from circulation.

Greatest Achievements

The founding and growth of Tudor Investment Corporation and the larger Tudor Group is undoubtedly one of Jones’ greatest achievements.

Jones also founded the Robin Hood Foundation which is a philanthropic organization aimed at reducing poverty and funded largely by hedge fund operators.

In addition to this, he founded the Bedford Stuyvesant I Have a Dream Foundation which helps to put students through college in Brooklyn, New York.

Adhering to his proven trading style and overall approach to investment has helped him to amass his great fortune over the years, as well as making Paul Tudor Jones a name that is widely recognized both in and out of the financial world.
