Unlikely Celebrities Who Trade the Financial Markets

The online trading revolution has clearly demonstrated that investing isn’t just for day-traders or Wall Street executives. Today, there are about 4 million retail forex traders around the world,[1] with many more investing in stocks, bonds mutual funds and other securities. As it turns out, celebrities are also active in this space. It makes perfect sense, if you think about it. What better way for the rich to get richer than through the financial markets?

Below is a list of some celebrities who are also active investors. If you have any other names you’d like to share, feel free to comment below and let us know what you think.

William Shatner

William Shatner, who starred as the original Captain Kirk on Star Trek, became spokesman of internet travel site Priceline in 1997. While this may not seem like an investment at first, Mr. Shatner negotiated to receive stock options in the company instead of pay. That decision made Shatner $600 million richer as of 2010, according to The Toronto Sun.[2]

Bono

The lead singer of U2 is known for being a philanthropist and champion of social causes. He is also involved in the private equity business. In particular, he founded Elevation Partners, a private equity firm focused on investing in new media and technology enterprises. Elevation manages about $2 billion in assets, making Bono quite the investor.[3]

Ashton Kutcher

We haven’t heard much from Ashton Kutcher since his days on “That 70’s Show” and reality TV show “Punk’d.” That’s probably because he’s been out making even bigger money in the private equity business. Kutcher’s portfolio of investments is massive and includes companies ranging from Airbnb to Skype and even Microsoft. One thing is for sure – Kutcher definitely favours tech stocks. Only time will tell whether his picks come out as winners.[4]

Nassim Taleb

Lebanese-American essayist and scholar is credited with writing one of the most influential books in the post-World War II era.[5] Taleb is well known for spending a considerable amount of time in the financial markets. As a former trader and risk analyst, Taleb received a lot of attention for his work on probability and uncertainty. It was while working at the Chicago Mercantile Exchange that he saw a few black swan events that would later inform his best selling book “Black Swan.”[6]

Magic Johnson

Magic Johnson was one of the most prolific players in NBA history. Since quitting basketball, he went on to found his very own holding company called Magic Johnson Enterprises. The conglomerate owns a slew of companies, ranging from restaurants to health clubs and even French corporation Sodexo. When it comes to investing, Magic Johnson certainly is no stranger.[7]
