US Jobless Claims Unexpectedly Drop to Lowest Level Since 1973 (News: 21/04/16)

Today’s Press

  • New applications for unemployment benefits fell by 6,000 to 247,000 in the week ended April 16, data from the Labor Department showed Thursday. The median forecast of economists surveyed by Bloomberg called for 265,000 claims. The number of Americans already on benefit rolls declined to a more than 15-year low.

  • The market got a boost from a pickup in the price of oil, which climbed about 4 percent after an early slide. When oil prices rise they tend to favor battered energy stocks and financial companies such as banks, which have been in the doldrums due to investor concerns that loans to struggling oil companies could go bad.

  • The euro and euro zone bond yields jumped on Thursday after European Central Bank president Mario Draghi said the bank’s policies were working, the economic recovery was continuing and inflation would pick up eventually.
