USD/JPY consolidated recent gains during the Asian session. After a dip on Wednesday to 119.27 buyers returned and pushed up USD/JPY to a peak of 121.04 late in New York. The pair eased to 120.85 by the Tokyo open. EUR/JPY was up modestly from 128.72 to 129.09. GBP/JPY too saw a modest lift from 177.94 to 178.42.
EUR/USD moved slightly higher in Asia on news of optimism over an EU-Greek deal. The EU statement and comments from Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras suggested hopes for an eventual deal but nothing substantive has been seen yet. The EU leaders summit continues for a second day today. The scheduled meeting between the Greek PM and German Chancellor Merkel Monday then comes into focus. EUR/USD rose from a late New York low of 1.0613 to 1.0696 in Asia.
EUR/GBP edged up from 0.7224 to 0.7238 whilst EUR/CHF moved up from 1.0548 to 1.0574, endeavoring to make tracks away from last night’s 1.0530 low.
GBP/USD saw modest gains from 1.4745 to 1.4776 in Asia, away from yesterday’s low of 1.4689.
USD/CHF traded between 0.9877-0.9906.
AUD/USD opened in Asia at 0.7645 after a modest rebound into the New York close. It was gently bid throughout, up from 0.7644 to 0.7687 with offers returning at the high.
NZD/USD closed lower in New York at 0.7414. From an early Asia low of 0.7405, it bounced, trading back up to 0.7451.
